Before signing on the dotted line, here are some questions to ask and/or things to know: Are there any other costs or potential costs that are not included in the estimate? If the answer is “no,” ask that a sentence be included in the contract stating that the contractor will cover any costs incurred in fulfilling the terms of the contract that are not already included in the contract. In other words, there should be no surprises! If the answer is “yes,” make sure that you understand what potential costs may arise that are not included in the estimate. Hardwood Cafe has a “no surprise” policy!

  • Make sure you understand what product is being installed whether it is solid ¾ inch hardwood, laminate or other synthetic product, hardwood veneer, etc. Pros and cons of these products are discussed in the “products” section of this site. At your request, a Hardwood Cafe estimate includes discussion of various types of flooring products and which one might be right for you.
  • Is the flooring “pre-finished” or “site-finished?” Site-finished means that unfinished hardwood is installed and then sanded, stained and finished. This generally takes about twice as long as pre-finished and creates excessive dust and fumes if not properly masked off. Hardwood Cafe installs both pre-finished and site-finished products and will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Will I be able to get to the fridge?! Make sure you understand any inconveniences that will result from the project so that you can be prepared.
  • How long will it take? Go for the realistic answer. Contractors are often working on more than one project at a time. Talk to the contractor about setting a realistic schedule and the sticking with it.
  • A down-payment is often required before materials are ordered and purchased. The remainder of the payment should not be made before the job is completed unless you have made special arrangements with the contractor that you are comfortable with. If full payment is made before the work is finished, there may not be much sense of urgency on the part of the contractor. Some larger contractors offer financing. Hardwood Cafe does not.
  • Will you be present when the work is being done? There are advantages to having the work done while you are away especially with a site-finished job. You may not be comfortable with this. It is important to work this out ahead of time with the contractor so you are agreed as to the hours during which work will be done. Most contractors work during “normal” daytime hours. Exceptions may be made depending on circumstances. Hardwood Cafe has flexible work hours in an effort to meet your scheduling preferences and time frames.
